healthy foundations for 2023

Healthy Foundations for 2023

Can you believe it’s 2023?

For many of us, last year was huge and at times felt like we were just holding on to dear life. But we made it! And sometimes we just have to celebrate that we made it through.

So take a deep breath and pat yourself on the back. You did it!

Ok, now that 2022 is gone, it’s time to start looking ahead to 2023. How often do people start January off with a list of resolutions, only to forget them all the week after? Let’s not do that again!

If you’ve been following us for a while, you know we are all about educating you to live a better, healthier life by making small switches that together end up having a big impact.

So let’s go back to what it’s all about here at GutAid.

1. Take Notice

What has become normal to you that you shouldn’t have? These things are not normal, and if this is normal to you, it’s time to do something about it.

  • Loose/watery stools
  • Pooping less than every second day
  • Bloating
  • Digestive discomfort
  • Ongoing stress

2. Understand

When we understand the ‘why’ behind something, it is much easier to implement and make it a habit. I don’t know about you, but I am not good at rote learning, if I can wrap my head around why I should do something, then I’m good to go. So here is a basic understanding of gut health:

It all starts with what we eat!

Think of your diet as a savings account, a few things:

  1. You can’t continue to overdraw and not expect to become bankrupt. Highly processed foods, sugar, and fried foods all take from your body without leaving anything of value. A little of this is fine; consistently eating like this will cause bankruptcy as the body becomes deficient in other areas and may cause chronic disease
  2. The small, consistent deposits add up

It’s not the once-a-year detox that makes the biggest impact; it’s the small everyday choices that consistently add up and have an impact. Choose one more vegetable every day, cut down on one biscuit, or switch your vegetable cooking oil to olive oil.

And how do we eat?

When we are stressed or on the run, our body shuts down digestion and sends the blood to the vital organs needed to survive, ie. the heart and extremities to run! So many of our digestive symptoms come from eating when our digestion is shut off.

3. Take Charge
  • Diversity and variety: consistently make small changes and add in greater variety (cooked and raw) and greater diversity (all the different kinds) of plant foods
  • Coffee is not breakfast
  • Digestion is key! You’ve heard me say it before: “You are not what you eat, but what you can digest and absorb.”. Nutritional deficiencies, digestive symptoms, feeling satisfied and so much more can come down to impaired digestion

Top tips for digestion:

  • Don’t eat on the run, sit down and relax
  • Pay attention to what foods are causing symptoms and avoid them. FYI, cheap, processed gluten, aka white bread, causes basically everyone’s symptoms when eaten in large amounts!
  • Constant digestive symptoms? Try a digestive enzyme to support digestion and absorption, taking the stress off your digestive system while it “resets.”

So welcome to 2023, I hope this gives you a few easy tips to get you on the right track this year!
